Honeysuckle Park in Doraville hosted the volleyball competition of the Georgia Games from July 13 to 14. The games promote physical fitness among Georgians within 50 sports with more than 10,000 athletes competing each year since its inception in 1990. The volleyball tournament had more than 320 players in the event and nearly 70 teams competing in the various categories.

The team of Come From Behind won the Men’s Triple A competition, led by Dunwoody resident Denis Kim. Ellenwood neighborhood resident Gerrett Edwards earned the bronze metal in the same division with his team.

Atlanta natives Damien Hart, Sebastian Kunze and Ashenati Gebrehiwot, who were members of the OZO team, finished third in the Men’s Triple BB division while the Men’s Triple B category was well represented with DeKalb natives such as Luciano Apponi, Zach Morris and Jonathan Loewen finished second with their team, Cunning Stunts. Third place in that same category was earned by Pudding, a team which included Stone Mountain resident Shixiao Wu and Atlanta native Chad Bowen. Amy Beaver helped lead her team to a win in the Women’s Triple A category and Atlanta native Claire Naughton guided her squad, Triple Threat Too, towards a first-place finish in the Junior Girls Triples 15U competition.

Finally, Atlanta residents Todd Harlicka and John Schroeder’s team earned second in the Men’s Triples Over-40 division while Hana Chelikowsky’s Notorious DIGS team earned a silver metal in the Women’s Triple BB event.

Any Georgian can participate in an event at the games and there are no limitations on the age, ability level or location of the player as long as he or she is a Georgia resident. The age range of participants has been from age 3 to 87 and has represented more than 139 counties and 549 cities. The Georgia State Games Commission, partnering with the Georgia Sports Foundation, has also created the Scholastic Sports Olympiad in order to encourage competition and physical fitness within Georgia schools.

Each team that finished in the top three within its respective divisions at the volleyball tournament is now eligible to participate in the State Games of America, which will be held in Harrisburg, Pa., from July 31 to Aug. 4.
