For his bar mitzvah project, River Trail Middle School rising eighth grader Michael Morgan wanted to connect to troops.

He reached out to an overseas soldier through HeroBox, an organization designed to help support the men and women in the military. HeroBox links people like Michael with a soldier, giving him an opportunity to let that GI know he’s appreciated.

“You get on the website, and they assign somebody to you,” Michael said.

Michael’s soldier was Sgt. Gerald Hoskins, a Blackhawk mechanic from Idaho deployed in Afghanistan.

“He sent me a wish list,” said Michael. “And I put together packages with things he wanted like hand warmers, healthy snacks, games, magazines and other reading material.”

Hoskins was overwhelmed by Michael’s project, and he even researched Judaism online to better understand what bar mitzvah means.

“This is such a wonderful mission for Michael,” he wrote to the family. “I only wish I could have started caring about something like this when I was so young … To know that such altruistic and charitable love for complete strangers exists, especially in this place, in this time, and in this way, is overwhelming.”

The sergeant left Afghanistan in February but planned to share his packages with soldiers who are still there.

Michael Morgan’s bar mitzvah was in March at Temple Dor Tamid in Johns Creek. Michael is the son of Marci and Richard Morgan and the brother of Jack Morgan.
