The Johns Creek Police Department will host its fifth annual golf tournament May 6 to benefit Special Olympics Georgia.

“Police departments [and] sheriff’s departments from all over the country raise money for Special Olympics,” said Maj. John Clifton with the police department. “I guess you could say it’s the law enforcement preferred charity.”

The tournament will take place at St. Ives Country Club in Johns Creek with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.

“Last year, our tournament raised around $20,000,” Clifton said. “We … raise money to send Special Olympic athletes to [the games]. They have fall, spring and summer games. It costs roughly about $270 to send an athlete to one of the games.”

He said there are more than 24,000 Special Olympic athletes in Georgia who compete.

“[For] the last three years, Johns Creek Police Department has raised the most money of all the police departments in the state of Georgia,” Clifton said. “We’re proud of that. Since we’ve started … we have raised over $180,000 for Special Olympics.”

In addition to the golf tournament, the department also organizes a polar plunge fundraiser in the winter. The two events are all part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

“The law enforcement torch run is not just a run,” Clifton said. “All throughout the year, we raise money for Special Olympics, and then the actual running of the torch is a symbol. It’s done every May before the summer games.”

The police department is still looking for tournament sponsors and for golfers to register by April 30. Sponsorships range from $250 to $5,000. Registration costs for participants are $125 per person or $500 for a team of four.
