Public Works Director Tom Black recommended city councilmembers approve a task order with Stantec Consulting Services expanding the sidewalk project to allow for operational and safety improvements as well as pedestrian connectivity.
Initial design work showed operational deficiencies along the road that would need to be addressed. Black said it made most sense to make those improvements now rather than later.
“I don’t want to waste anybody’s money and that’s basically what we’d be doing if we put the sidewalk and trail in and had to come back in a year and a half and tear it up,” he said.
The first phase of the project will focus on the length of Abbotts Bridge Road from Jones Bridge Road to Parsons Road. A later phase will tackle improvements from Parsons to Medlock Bridge Road.
Black outlined the project during the council’s work session meeting Monday, and councilmembers will vote on whether to approve the task order at their June 17 meeting.
Also Monday, councilmembers voted unanimously to approve a project framework agreement between the city and the Georgia Department of Transportation for improvements on Medlock Bridge Road from Old Alabama Road to State Bridge Road. Councilwoman Kelly Stewart was not in attendance to vote during the meeting.
The project, which will be completely funded through GDOT, will include creating an additional southbound lane, improving the turn radius for the shopping center entrance south of State Bridge Road, and extending the northbound left-turn lane for vehicles turning onto Medlock Crossing Parkway.
