Song of Atlanta Show Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women singers who perform barbershop harmony.
Musical Director Becki Hine, of Johns Creek, said she has learned a lot in her 19 years of directing the group.
“I’ve learned not only about how to direct a chorus and how to motivate volunteer singers. I’ve learned how to prepare for competitions and shows both physically and psychologically, ways to teach music and ways to teach choreography and ways to get through to different types of learners.”
Hine is also a showmanship judge for the international organization, and she said through singing she has “a Christmas card list with over 800 people around the world.”
Associate Director Pam Feltenberger has been with the chorus for 13 years and said she has also made friends around the world through international competitions.
“When you work like that you make such strong friendships,” she said.
Feltenberger was instrumental in moving the chorus to their new rehearsal location at Northbrook United Methodist Church in Roswell. She worked at the church for a long time and knew the chorus was looking for a place they could call home.
“I talked to [the church’s] building facilities manager and our music director and they were thrilled to have us,” she said.
Being in the chorus is difficult but rewarding, Feltenberger said. It is an audition-only group but anyone is welcome to audition.
The group’s annual show called March Madness is taking place March 2 at 4 p.m. at Norcross High School. Early bird tickets are $20 when purchased before Feb. 15. After that tickets are $25, and children 12 and under are free.
