With competition winding down in Region 5-A, Landmark Christian attempts to continue its perfect run in league play.

On Friday at Bill Thorn Stadium, the War Eagles host Holy Innocents’ in their final regular season home game. Before its bye, Landmark improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the region with a 38-14 victory over Pace Academy Oct. 19.

Jeremiah Kirkland rushed for 219 yards on 34 carries and three touchdowns. Stockton McGuire threw a touchdown pass to Josh Nobles and Ben Baggett had two interceptions for the War Eagles, who rushed for 407 yards in their fifth straight win.

Meanwhile, the Golden Bears enter this matchup just as hot, winning their last four games which included a 21-14 triumph over Pace Saturday.

But Holy Innocents could fall to 4-2 in Region 5-A on Friday if Kirkland continues to lead Landmark in rushing. The junior running back has racked up 1,261 rushing yards and 18 rushing TDs on 145 carries. Also in each region game this season, Kirkland has run for at least 150 yards and scored at least three times.

This will be the third matchup between the War Eagles and Golden Bears. When the two teams last met in 2009, Holy Innocents’ walked away with a 41-18 home victory.

Just down the road, Langston Hughes also aims to remain perfect in region play. Keion Davis, who ran for 113 yards after halftime, rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers improved to 3-0 in Region 3-AAAAAA with a 28-14 win against East Coweta last Friday.

Kenny Moxey had two touchdown passes for Langston Hughes, which will take a five-game winning streak to The Doghouse, where Tri-Cities will be waiting this Friday.

Chosen to be in the top of the region standings before the start of the season, the Bulldogs kept themselves out of last place with a 21-14 victory over winless Westlake, snapping a four-game losing streak.

This will be the first meeting between the Panthers and Bulldogs.

In Class AAA, the Woodward War Eagles wrap up their regular season while trying to secure a first-round home playoff game when they visit Cedar Grove at Panthersville Stadium on Friday.

Terry Googer threw a 39-yard TD pass to Conor Pilch with 20 seconds left in the War Eagles’ fourth straight win, a 20-14 triumph over St. Pius last week.

Woodward edged Cedar Grove 27-24 last year.
