By the end of last week, 27,000 Henry County voters had made it to the polls for early voting, which began Oct. 15.

Elections Director Janet Shellnutt said the two voting locations that were open Oct. 22 through 26 — the main elections office in McDonough and the Ted Strickland Community Center in Stockbridge — were churning out high numbers each day.

“I know our office hasn’t slowed down,” she said.

By the time all votes are counted for the general election, including Election Day Nov. 6, Shellnutt said she expects voter turnout to reach between 75 and 80 percent.

“That’s a good turnout,” she said. “You’re never going to be 100 percent.”

Shellnutt said typically in local elections and primaries, voter turnout typically peaks around 18 percent. It’s the presidential elections that bring the large numbers, and 75 to 80 percent is what was seen in the 2008 election, she said.

Henry County has 135,000 registered voters.

Early voting continues through Friday at five locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. — the main elections office at 345 Phillips Drive in McDonough; Ted Strickland Community Center, 130 W. Berry St., Stockbridge; Fairview Library, 28 Austin Road, Stockbridge; The Depot, 17 E. Main St., Hampton; and the Locust Grove Recreation Center, 10 Cleveland St., Locust Gove.

A full list of voting locations for the Nov. 6 general election can be found on the election department’s website at www.co.henry.ga.us/Registrars.

In addition to the presidential election, several local offices will be decided, including Henry County Commission chairman, District 1 and District 2.
