The Spanish Academy at Covenant Presbyterian Church is set to open in Buckhead this fall.

The academy has other locations in east Cobb and Suwanee. Buckhead residents Will and DeShea Brooks are the owners of the academy.

The academy staff follows the immersion method, where students learn everything in Spanish.

Victoria Salzman, of Buckhead, said she drove to Suwanee for two years so her son Noah, 5, could attend. Her daughter Samantha, 3, currently takes the extracurricular classes at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Buckhead.   Students also learn about Spanish history and culture.

Brooks said a major benefit is the openness the program brings to other cultures, as well as the “tremendous brain benefits” it brings. “Children who speak two languages do better on cognitive tests,” she said.

About 65 to 70 percent of the students are English-speaking children and up to 30 percent are native Spanish-speaking students, she said.

The maximum number of students at each location is 70.

She said they also offer Spanish classes at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist, Peachtree Road United Methodist and Peachtree Presbyterian churches.

An addition to the new school will be a mother’s morning out program once a week on an as-needed basis, Brooks said.

There will be an open house Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian for prospective parents.

Brooks said tuition varies from $135 to $650 a month, depending on how many days a week a child attends.

We have a daughter who attended 3 years at the Spanish Academy in Suwanee and a son who will start in the fall in Buckhead. We cannot say enough about the nurturing, caring environment the school provides. The dedication of the teachers and owners is incredible. The experience was eye-opening for us as parents as we had no idea prior to our daughter's enrollment there how important language immersion is at a young age to truly impact the development of the brain. The native speakers as teachers has a huge impact on the success of the program. We are so excited about the new Buckhead location!

We have three children currently attending The Spanish Academy and we could not be happier! The teachers engage the students with songs, dance, poems, games and many other fun activities. My children continue to build their proficiency in Spanish in a atmosphere that is enjoyable, fun, exciting and developmentally appropriate. I would recommend The Spanish Academy without reservations to anyone interested in giving their child the gift of a second language.

Both of my children attended the Spanish Academy through kindergarten. On top of the wonderful environment, it was a tremendous benefit to their educational growth. The Spanish Academy provided a great foundation for their language development in both English and Spanish. They were reading in both languages before they graduated. The Spanish Academy has wonderful native speaking teachers and the kids have so much fun learning. It is a real treasure and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
