Lovett won its first state baseball championship in four years, coming from behind to defeat Buckhead archrival Westminster 4-3 in game two of their Class AA championship series and then clinching the AA title with a 5-2 in the third and deciding contest at Westminster's Harry Lloyd Stadium Monday.

Westminster, a 2-1 winner in the opening game Saturday, appeared to have its first state title since 1975 wrapped up with a 3-1 lead and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second contest.

However, Lovett bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and added another run in the eighth to take the 4-3 win and even the series at 1-all.

The Lions proceeded to take control of the third game with three runs in the top of the first and added a run each in the second and seventh innings to claim their first state crown since 2009. Westminster closed the gap at the end with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Mitch Stallings -- Lovett's starting pitcher in the opening game Saturday -- gave up five hits and threw seven strikeouts on two days rest to take the title-clinching win on the mound for the Lions in game three.

A complete recap of the second and third games will be published in next Wednesday's printed edition of the Northside Neighbor.
