Fayette County’s ability to shoot from deep was too much for M.L. King to overcome Saturday, resulting in a 60-56 setback at Morrow High School.

M.L. King senior Paul Jackson scored 14 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter and displayed his ability to convert tough layups in the paint.

Chaz Berry led the Tigers with 28 points, including five 3-pointers, and James Madison commit Dante Sterling added 18 points.

Fayette County took the lead for good in the first quarter, thanks to an 11-0 run to close the period for a 17-6 advantage. Berry made three 3-pointers and converted a three-point play during another surge in the second quarter to extend the margin to 30-10 before Jackson sparked a 12-2 run with a three-point play for a 32-22 halftime score.

In the third quarter, the Lions continued to reduce their deficit and trailed by just four points (42-38) heading into the final period.

Then with 5:48 left, Jackson made a basket for a 44-42 score but Sterling nailed a 3-pointer to trigger an 8-0 surge. The Lions had one more response, closing within 54-51 on a layup by Jackson with 54 seconds to go, but the Tigers eventually sealed things at the stripe.

Greg King, who had three dunks, and Kevon Harris both scored eight points for M.L. King, which will visit Miller Grove on Tuesday.
