Fresh off powering Eagle’s Landing to a region crown, the junior helped propel the squad to a top 10 finish at the GHSA state meet over the weekend.
Insiders say he’s just getting warmed up.
“Brian was a kid that was under the radar going into this season,” said Golden Eagles coach Claud Spinks. “But, he worked hard … and put himself up there as one of the top 20 boys’ runners in the state.”
Cato’s output this season was due in large part to the degree of work he put in before the 2012 season even began. His adapting to a more intensive training regimen cleared the way for him to take his game to the next level.
“He had a good summer,” said Spinks. “He had to make a decision about whether he wanted to be great.
“Brian did that … we’re going to give him the training to do that.”
The Eagle’s Landing coaching brain trust plans to push Cato like never before in the offseason and the 2013 cross country season.
By all indications, Cato will respond accordingly.
“He’s had to follow some good runners here — now he’s that runner,” Spinks said. “He really wants it … he’s committed.”
