The 145-pound senior owns a 166-38 career record; he is a three-time area champion, a three-time state qualifier and a two-time state placer.
“I knew that he would be valuable to the program on the first day he started practice,” said Blessed Trinity wrestling coach Richard Barden of Strawn, who placed sixth in the state as a 125-pound sophomore and third in the state last year as a 138-pound junior. “He works hard at every practice, pushes his teammates to be successful and has never disappointed me since the first day he walked into the room.”
Barden went on to describe Strawn as a student of the sport and a tactician on the mats — deriving his success not only from athletic ability, but for his knack of out-thinking his opponents.
That combination of brains and brawn has led to one of the best individual season in school history this season.
The senior is 55-1 overall, has a team leading 102 takedowns, and will head to Macon this weekend as a favorite to bring home a 145-pound state title.
“Since Evan entered the Blessed Trinity wrestling room his goal has always been to capture a state title,” said Barden. “He is intent on accomplishing it [this weekend].”
