In 2012 at the Georgia Olympics, the last hurdle in the 300-meter hurdles was the difference between Landmark Christian junior Darius Smith possibly finishing first and ultimately settling for sixth place.

“I was leading the whole race and at the very last hurdle I fell, Smith said. “I could almost practically touch the finish line.”

But there wouldn’t be any settling or mishaps on May 4 in Jefferson when Smith came close to fully redeeming himself with a second-place finish in the same event.

“I wasn’t even thinking about that,” Smith said. “I’ve been running five years and I only fell in a race once—that race.”

Smith also had a better showing in the 110 hurdles, placing second after a fifth-place finish last year. As a result of Smith earning eight points from each individual event and helping the 4-by-400 relay team notch 10 points, Landmark finished second overall with 59.5 points.

“I was just happy that I was able to perform in that way even after injury,” said Smith, who had shin splints and knee issues all season.

Smith plans to run track during the summer while also preparing to fill the War Eagles’ void at running back with Jeremiah Kirkland at Lovejoy.
