Chances were, South Atlanta’s DeAndre Jackson was the smallest player on the field against Lithonia on Aug. 24. But the 5-foot-3 athlete had the biggest impact in a 34-19 season-opening win.

Jackson, a senior running back, kick returner and safety, ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns, and had an interception.

“He was an all-around player and just found a way to make it happen for us the whole game,” South Atlanta coach Julius Moses said. “He was a big reason why we were able to be successful.”

“My speed was working for me,” Jackson said. “Every time we used the sweep it was good.”

Since Jackson is small it is probably no surprise that he is fast but his ability to be an effective safety – a position often played by bigger athletes – makes him even more special.

“He ain’t your average 5-3,” Moses said. “He can dunk a basketball and jump out of gym. He’s tenacious and super fast. He covers the entire field. We only play one safety so we depend on him to cover the field from sideline to sideline.”

Also referred to as “Hoghead,” Jackson plans to play football in college while majoring in business.
