Everything leading up to Luella’s game against Rockdale County on Oct. 11 was going well for senior linebacker Jaylon Harris and it continued onto the football field that night.

“I just had a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast and a good day at school so I just knew everything was going to be good,” Harris said.

When the final horn sounded, Harris had a team-high 14 tackles, a sack, a forced and recovered fumble and two interceptions (one was returned for a touchdown) in the Lions’ 28-14 victory.

“We had pressure coming from our defensive line so I have to thank them first,” said Harris while describing his TD return. “We put a stunt on and the quarterback was looking for a quick slant. I got a good 45-degree angle and was right there waiting and took it to the house.”

Along with Harris, Sal Vazquez and Steve Osondu also had defensive scores for Luella.

“As a defensive player I really like having the ball in my hands,” Harris said.

After graduation, Harris aspires to convert to safety at the college level like one of his favorite players Matt Elam, who currently plays for the Baltimore Ravens.

“He is inspiring and Ray Lewis is too,” Harris said.

Tennessee, Wingate and Tennessee-Chattanooga have shown interest in Harris, who wants to be a sports agent and archaeologist.
