Jermel Johnson makes things happen defensively for Riverwood.

The senior middle linebacker certainly had his share of big moments in the Raiders’ narrow 13-10 loss to Region 7AAAAA (B) rival Pope Oct. 26, recording 11 tackles, including two for a loss, as well as a sack and a pass breakup.

The Pope game was one of many games this season Johnson has registered double-digit tackles. He also had 12 stops in Riverwood’s 55-27 victory over Northview Sept. 28 and 10 tackles in the Raiders’ 49-7 win over Osborne Oct. 19.

Johnson has also contributed on offense at fullback, running 73 yards for a touchdown in a 48-0 victory over Cambridge Aug. 31 and amassing 85 rushing yards in a 24-14 win over cross-town rival Holy Innocents’ Sept. 7.

As the anchor of the defense, as well as his contribution on both offense and special teams and his role as a team leader, Johnson has been a big part of a breakthrough season for Riverwood — which is enjoying its best season in years with a 6-3 overall record.

“Jermel is just one of those players you hope you have one of every year,” Riverwood coach Robert Ingram said. “He has been the cornerstone of our defense for the past two years. He is a leader on and off the field. We go as Jermel goes. He is also our starting fullback and plays a lot of special teams.”
