Joe Bridges played a key role for the Westminster football team in its drive to the second round of the Class AA state playoffs.

Now, he is looking to make a similar contribution to the school’s basketball squad.

The 6-foot-2 senior forward, a tight end and defensive lineman on the football team, has made as much of an impact on the hardwood as he has on the gridiron.

Bridges averaged 15.73 points and 7.43 rebounds a game and compiled a 45.9 percent field goal percentage to lead the Wildcats to a 5-2 record as of last Thursday.

He has come through with season highs of 22 points in a 56-52 overtime victory over Southwest Atlanta Christian Dec. 11 and 19 points in the Wildcats’ season-opening 56-54 loss to North Atlanta Dec. 1.

“Joe has hit the floor with a full head of steam, coming off an incredible senior football season,” Westminster coach Tray Malloy said. “Joe’s love of basketball is apparent in how he plays the game — with all-out, 100 percent effort. He possesses good size and length and has developed an outside game to go with his strength off the dribble drive. Joe is able to run the floor and finish in transition, which makes him a matchup problem at times.”
