After being part of a defense that allowed just three opponents to reach double digits this past season, Eagle’s Landing Christian senior linebacker Josh Shockley was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year in Region 5-A.

“I attribute the award to all of the hard work by me and my team,” Shockley said. “I definitely couldn’t have done it without my D-line.”

“Josh has been a great football player for us,” ELCA football coach Jonathan Gess said. “This is his third year in a row having 100 tackles or more. He’s just a real leader out there. A very physical and dominant player who I’m definitely going to miss.”

Shockley specifically attributes his ability to stop the ball carrier to extreme focus.

“I’m just looking for the ball and looking to make plays,” he said. “I’m really mission-focused and when it’s time to play I come to play.”

Gess believes Shockley possesses a sixth sense on the field.

“Before the snap, he knows where the football is going or soon as the play develops he reads his keys and kind of knows what is going on,” Gess said. “Lots of hard work, film study and practice propel him to be a dominant defensive player.”

Shockley, who has a 3.6 grade-point average, may walk on at Auburn and plans to major in mechanical engineering.
