In the third quarter against Redan last Friday, Columbia senior Maurice Rivers demonstrated why he will be playing basketball at Rice next year.

Rivers, a 6-foot-6 forward, scored 12 of his 21 points in the frame to help the Eagles pull ahead for good in a 70-48 rout of Redan.

With the score tied 29-29 at the start of the third, Rivers made a jumper on the team’s second possession and then on the next trip down the floor, Rivers turned a missed shot into a putback dunk. Later in the period, he also highlighted the decisive 19-7 run with another dunk and a layup for a three-point play.

Rivers, who finished with nine rebounds, punctuated his performance with alley-oop dunk from Anthony Rice early in the fourth.

“I’m a long, versatile athlete who can play multiple positions and can defend multiple positions,” said Rivers when asked to describe himself on the floor. “I’m a dog on the court. I get rebounds and do whatever the coach needs done.”

Khalil Haynes scored 16 points for the Eagles.

As far as Rivers, he identified Rice’s highly ranked engineering program as a key element in becoming an Owl instead of attending Winthrop, Campbell or Troy.

“I want to major in either scientific or mechanical engineering,” said Rivers, who has a 3.0 grade-point average.
