After helping St. Pius qualify for the playoffs for an eighth straight season and before attending Auburn next year, Nick Ruffin will participate in the 2014 International Bowl Series as a member of the USA National Football Team on Jan. 4.

“It is a blessing and an honor to play for my country, my family and myself,” Ruffin said. “It gave me a new sense of what hard work can really do for you.”

While playing defensive back this year, Ruffin, who runs a 4.41 second 40-yard dash, had 59 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries for the 9-4 Golden Lions.

“I wanted to bring a championship back to the school which would’ve been the second one in school history,” Ruffin said. “Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to do that but I met most of my personal goals.”

In May, Ruffin verbally committed to become an Auburn Tiger and plans to sign officially in February.

“I had a very detailed list of the factors that went into my decision,” Ruffin said. “One of those was do they see past the football field? Do they look at the academics?

“I want to get a great education. After that will the community as well as my coaches and teammates develop me not only as a player but as a young man?”

Ruffin has a 3.2 GPA and plans to major in mechanical engineering.
