“He’s won every meet we’ve been in during the season,” ACS track and field coach Mitch Grubb said.
According to Grubb, a lot of Hutchinson’s success during the regular season stemmed from his ability to build up speed.
“He’s not a great vertical jumper but he’s a really good speed jumper,” Grubb said. “He uses his speed to carry his momentum real well.
“He will approach the bar a lot faster than most high jumpers do because he knows he doesn’t have that great vertical,” Grubb said. “But by going with a little more speed, he can carry himself a lot better over the bar.”
Hutchinson also finished second in the 110 and 300 hurdles, and helped the 4-by-100 relay team finish second.
“He is just a great kid and will run whatever you ask him to,” Grubb said.
Hutchinson also played goalie for the soccer team this season. “His knees are a little banged up now from soccer,” Grubb said. “He will take a few days off, then get back working on his steps and get the speed that he needs to get a good height.”
