Cartersville Downtown Development Authority announced the intent of Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers to open a location at 28 S. Wall Street in historic downtown.

Hoping for a December open date, Mellow Mushroom will be on the corner of Main and Wall streets, on the site of the former Antonino’s Italian Grotto, a statement said.

Mellow Mushroom focuses on local ownership and operation, believing that to be the best way to serve the customer and the local community, and at the same time convey the culture of the brand the authority said in the statement.

As part of this philosophy, every Mellow Mushroom location is developed with a completely unique look and feel.

The Cartersville location will pay homage to vintage era of downtown Cartersville, highlighting the unique charm and character of the area with themed images of the Etowah River and other artistic tie-ins to the various retail outfitters in the downtown area the statement stated.

Authority Manager Tara Currier said, “Cartersville is a wonderful community full of art, history, music and the outdoors, which is an unparalleled match of perfection to Mellow Mushroom. This organization of over 150 restaurants has such a wonderful and unique concept, and I am thrilled to welcome the atmosphere and incredible food to downtown Cartersville.”

The menu will feature a variety of pizzas, hoagies, salads, calzones and appetizers.

Options for vegetarians, vegans, kids, and those on a gluten free plan will also be available.

Founded in 1974 in Atlanta, the franchise operates under Home-Grown Industries of Georgia, Inc., and for 39 years has been serving up fresh stone-baked pizzas to order in an eclectic, art-filled and family-friendly environment.

“The Mellow Mushroom experience is unique in the restaurant industry, operating outside the perimeters of traditional casual dining for over 30 years,” said Currier. “As a customer, you will be submersed into a world of boundless creativity. The brand allows for great expression and individuality, and the atmosphere entices you to take pride in the surroundings of the individual location. It is the kind of place people want to hang out, and will be a wonderful draw for downtown Cartersville.”

Owners of the Cartersville Mellow Mushroom, Frank Kenney and Leon Berry, share their enthusiasm in opening up shop in downtown Cartersville.

“We look forward to serving Cartersville with great food and spirits for the long term. We also are very eager to start getting involved in the community in every way we can,” the pair said in the statement.

The restaurant will have something for everyone, including outside patio, a large spacious dining room and a full service bar. The bar will serve up a variety of craft beers, wine and cocktail options.

The restaurant intends to feature trivia nights, family nights, beer tastings, special events and more the statement said.

Mellow Mushroom will operate seven days a week Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

I wish the Downtown Development Authority had embraced other downtown business with as much enthusiasm as Mellow Mushroom. Maybe local businesses wouldn't be closing their doors as much if they had an organization that actually advocated and worked for these businesses. Want to see how Cartersville city government works? Ask them why a fire hydrant that was placed in front of this location at taxpayers expense will have to relocated at additional taxpayers expense....
