Spring and summer usher in a plethora of road races all over the country.

“Many races will be run on June 1 in the U.S. In fact, I counted over 60,” said DeAnn Fordham, development director of the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell.

“Races have become a way for organizations to bring attention to a cause, raise money and gather supporters together.”

One particular race in north Fulton has been in existence for more than three decades. The Possum Trot, which will also be run on June 1, benefits the nature center.

“It is a rare thing for a race to have such a long standing tradition, like the Possum Trot does, in serving the community and raising funds for the Chattahoochee Nature Center, the state’s oldest and largest non-profit environmental education facility,” Fordham said.

Started 35 years ago to help the center make payroll, today it helps provide critical operating dollars to make up part of the total $2.7 million budget needed to run the center each year. “Would you believe that the center is open 362 days a year and we only have 22 full time staff members?” Fordham said.

“We still have to raise money to keep the center open through our regular annual races, fundraisers and festivals, by writing grants, with our gate and program fees, and by soliciting sponsorships.”

This year’s Possum Trot will get underway at 7:30 a.m. at the nature center on a smooth, certified course with scenic views of the Chattahoochee River. “It is a beautiful way to see the river in its glory,” said Fordham.

A Kids 1 Mile Fun Run starts a half hour earlier at 7 a.m. All participants should allow time to walk to the center from the remote parking lot provided at St. Francis School on Willeo Road.

Register early for $28 or on site day of race for $35 for the 10K and $15 for the 1 Mile Fun Run. Participants receive a Possum T-shirt and swag bag.

Overall and Masters Male and Female finishers in 13 age groups will receive awards at the ceremony at the conclusion of the race at the after party in the nature center’s Ben Brady Lakeside Pavilion with music and food.

The Chattahoochee Nature Center is at 9135 Willeo Road in Roswell.

Register online at www.Active.com or at Big Peach Running Company Stores.
