“It’s a great month of health, fitness and social activities that our seniors get to take advantage of,” said Sunnie McWalters, recreation program manager for the Johns Creek Recreation and Parks Division.
The city of Johns Creek will host the opening ceremonies at Newtown Park for the second year in a row.
“The opening ceremony is one of the biggest things,” McWalters said.
There will be field game competitions, such as a softball skills challenge, a football toss, a half-mile walk and a mile walk. The North Fulton mayors will vie for bragging rights in a special mayors’ challenge.
The games will continue throughout May with events such as golf, tennis, swimming, bowling, badminton, ballroom dance, bocce ball and more. Being that this annual event is hosted by the parks and recreation departments from Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton, Johns Creek and Sandy Springs, along with the Fulton County Housing and Human Services Department’s Office of Aging, activities will take place at more than a dozen locations in North Fulton.
“We’ve come a long way since we first started,” said Mary Rummell, program coordinator at the Roswell Adult Recreation Center.
Nineteen years ago, only Roswell, Alpharetta and Fulton County hosted the games, she said. Through the years, the event grew larger with more activities and participants.
“I’d probably say we have over 400 athletes that participate,” Rummell said.
A new event this year is the Texas Hold ‘Em No Limit Poker Tournament held May 3 at Park Place at Newtown School in Johns Creek.
“Each year we try to keep adding things,” Rummell said.
Eventually, organizers would like to add athletic competitions that are more team-based, like basketball or softball games, she said. The North Fulton Golden Games are the first step towards participating in the state’s senior Olympics and then the country’s, and team games are offered on the state level, Rummell added.
The North Fulton Golden Games will culminate with an awards luncheon May 23 in Atlanta, and a senior health fair will take place May 29 in Roswell.
Registration for the North Fulton Golden Games is $15. Certain events require an additional fee. Registration packets are available at North Fulton senior centers.
