North Springs Charter High School recently changed its magnet program to a revised “academies” curriculum.

The two magnet programs were math and science and visual and performing arts, the school announced during a media event last week. North Springs has kept the two magnet programs, which are now in their own academy, and added two academies — the humanities academy and the career, technical and leadership academy.

“The goal is to have everyone in an academy,” said Tarrek Shaban, a senior at the school and one of the school’s ambassadors. “It gives you more of a sense of community and belonging.”

School spokeswoman Carol Ciepluch said that students who were in a magnet program at the school performed better academically than those who were not in a magnet program.

Students who are in the math and science or visual and performing arts academies will still be able to earn a magnet seal on diplomas if they complete the magnet program. Those who complete programs in the other two academies will earn a distinguished diploma upon graduation, according to Ciepluch. She said the two academies that did not have a magnet program were just as rigorous as the magnet programs.

Some classes in the career, technical and leadership academy include graphic design an entrepreneurship class and healthcare classes. The healthcare science class has a working EKG machine and simulated hospital room.

Humanities electives include a school newspaper class, foreign languages, Model United Nations and a mock trial program.

“The idea is to offer a wide array of electives where kids can focus in and be purposeful and be more engaged,” said Ciepluch.
