Last season without any seniors on the roster, the Lady Mustangs recorded a 20-9-2 overall record and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
“We do have high expectations for the season and we’ve got some goals that we want to reach,” Ola softball coach Gidget Gue said. “We didn’t have any seniors last year. We did lose one player but are just excited for a great year.”
The start of the 2013 season has been close to perfect for Ola, which is 5-1 after battling five teams. (The Lady Mustangs split a doubleheader against East Coweta on Aug. 14.)
“It’s a pretty good start,” Gue said. “We’re still putting everything into the best package that we can. Several players are hitting real well right now.”
Senior Savannah McHellon, who had 13 strikeouts against Pike County on Aug. 17, leads the team with a pair of home runs and junior Raya Moncus has also homered.
After a four-day break, the Lady Mustangs begin region play Thursday against Forest Park, which they defeated 15-0 last season on the way to a 9-5 Region 4-AAAAA mark.
“Our region is always tough,” Gue said. “The past several years we’ve had three to four representatives at the Elite Eight. Knowing that, every game is critical. Every play is critical. We are definitely focused and know what our goals are.”
Last season, Ola finished fourth in the region behind Union Grove, which won the Class AAAAA title, Northgate and Whitewater, respectively.
On Aug. 29, the Lady Mustangs will face Northgate, which they split four games with in 2012, but will not meet Union Grove and Whitewater until the end of the season.
