Grab your best Hawaiian shirt and paddle over to O’Neal Plaza in downtown Douglasville for Surf Fest 2012 Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Douglasville Cultural Arts Council and Foster Productions of Douglas County will present this all-day, free family-friendly event featuring 12 great instrumental surf bands. These bands are all inspired by the great retro sounds of the 1960s like Dick Dale, or The Ventures (“Hawaii 5-0” theme song).
Children’s activities, hula contests, food vendors, and prizes will be featured.

Dog River Library in Douglasville is set to host “A Day with Southern Author Terry Kay” Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Kay is the author of such international best-sellers as “To Dance with the White Dog” and “The Valley of Light,” both of which were made into Hallmark Hall of Fame films. He won the 2004 Townsend Prize for Fiction for “The Valley of Light” and is the winner of the 2007 Lindberg Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Upcoming programs scheduled at Sweetwater Creek State Park in Douglas County include:
- Sweetwater Creek by Kayak Saturday, June 30, 10 a.m.-noon. A two-hour outing in a tandem kayak on Sweetwater Creek, this is for adults (18 years and older) who can swim. Kayak, PFD, and paddle included. Meet at the Visitors Center. Registration in advance necessary at (770) 732-5871. Cost is $15 plus $5 parking.
- Historic New Manchester Mill Tour every Saturday, June 30. This hike involves following Sweetwater Creek down to the historic five-story Civil War-era New Manchester Mill with a park ranger or historian alongside the rapids (up to class IV-plus) of Sweetwater Creek. This walking tour requires a moderate mile-long hike (total) down to the mill and back. Cost is $5 plus $5 parking.
- Junior Ranger Camp July 6, July 12, July 25 and Aug. 1, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. These day camps are for children ages 6 to 12 who have not previously been in a Junior Ranger program.
This camp focuses on attaining the Level 1 Deer badge by completing seven activities. There will be nature and history hikes, a live animal program, and nature-oriented arts and craft projects.

Christian music artist Dara Maclean will perform a free concert July 2 at noon at the Arbor Place Mall Food Court.
Maclean recently released a first album entitled “You Got My Attention.”
“Toys for All Ages” citizen art exhibit is set for the Douglas County Courthouse Gallery beginning July 3 on the third floor of the Douglas County Courthouse, 8700 Hospital Drive.
The exhibit will feature art and collectibles of toys from children up to grandparents on view through July. It is free and open to the public, and is a program of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners through its Department of Communications and Community Relations.
