The third annual ArtCAN, set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Atlanta Ballet’s Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre in northwest Atlanta, will give attendees a rare opportunity to see three different arts organizations work together on one project.

The event will include pop-up performances from the Atlanta Ballet, Atlanta Opera and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra culminating in a collaborative piece, “Speranza” (Italian for “hope”) with music, dance and song performed for the first time. All of the evening’s performances will take place within the setting of a silent auction of fine art by artists from around the world whose lives have been closely affected by cancer.

ArtCAN is a fundraiser for the Joseph C. Monastra Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, which supports pancreatic cancer research at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore and at Emory University School of Medicine in DeKalb County. Known as the “silent killer,” pancreatic cancer has the No. 1 fatality rate of all cancers and is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women.

The collaborative piece began as a musical elegy composed by Juan R. Ramírez, the symphony’s principal violinist with and founder and artistic director of Atlanta Virtuosi Foundation Inc. To expand on and deepen the experience of this elegy, an Italian operatic libretto was composed by soprano Isabella Baer de Cortes, and choreography was added by Armando Luna, the ballet’s choreographer and principal teacher.

ArtCAN also will include hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, keynote addresses reviewing recent breakthroughs in cancer research, live music, artistic performances and a fine art silent auction. Tickets start at $75 per person. The centre is located at 1695 Marietta Blvd.

It is unique and unprecedented this year to have artistic representation from three cultural pillars organizations of our metropolitan city: The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, The Atlanta Opera Company and The Atlanta Ballet. It is an honor for me to assist this endeavor composing a new piece for this wonderful event. Thank you- Juan R. Ramírez
