In a news release, Riverwood International Charter School Wednesday announced the selection of Robert Shaw as the Sandy Springs public school’s new principal.

“I am excited about this new opportunity and I look becoming a part of the Riverwood community,” said Shaw, whose first day is June 3.

He replaces interim Principal Ron Tesch, who came out of retirement to lead the school after Principal Christopher Triolo resigned in January to move back to Charlotte, N.C., to be closer to his family, including his father, who is ill.

Formerly the principal of Hillgrove High and assistant principal of Pope High, both in Cobb County, Shaw comes with many accolades. His work produced the following: 2011 School of Excellence by the Georgia Department of Education and 2012 Top 20 High Schools in Metro Atlanta by Atlanta magazine.

Shaw was responsible for instituting several staff development programs including collaborative data teams and faculty training in differentiation, assessment and student motivation. He also developed and supervised the implementation of several instructional programs including Project 2400 (a strategic partnership between the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce and the Cobb County School District to help enhance students’ SAT scores) and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination, a college-readiness system for elementary through higher education, designed to increase school-wide learning and performance.)

Additionally, he helped develop NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Core) and Freshman Boot-Camp. Originally a social studies teacher who has taught several sections of U.S. history, world history, AP U.S. government and IB courses, Shaw has served in various schools in both Cobb and DeKalb counties and has coached junior varsity baseball.

It is a good thing that Shaw left Hillgrove. My children have shared horror stories of this bully. I generally support school leaders but this guy and his side kick Dr. K. are waayyyyyyy over the top.
