On Saturday, the Southwest Atlanta Christian Lady Warriors entered Forest Park with intentions of remaining unbeaten. Meanwhile, the Warriors had plans of notching their first win of the season.

Both were successful.

Marquita Daniels scored 15 points and Keimeshia Walker added 10 as the Lady Warriors held the Lady Panthers to four points in the second half of a 42-28 victory, pushing their record to 6-0.

“We still didn’t play the best game but we did step up and make the changes we needed to make and that is a sign of being able to make the adjustments according to what is going on,” SACA girls’ coach Jackie Cowan said.

“I think we just had some mental breakdowns in the second half and we struggled on offense,” Forest Park girls’ coach Steven Cole said. “Defensively, I still think we are playing well and got a lot of room to grow. Everything that is happening I think is fixable and that is something to look forward to.”

Tai Dozier scored 30 points, including five 3-pointers, in the Warriors’ 59-46 triumph Rayagainst the Panthers, who received 19 points from Rayvon Elliot.

“It was celebratory but we got a lot of work to do,” SACA boys’ coach Gary Cage said. “We’re not satisfied with just one W.”

Facing a 24-17 deficit to begin the third quarter, the Lady Warriors used their full-court trapping pressure to force the Lady Panthers into a bevy of turnovers and tough shots.

“Holding them to four points after halftime was big,” Cowan said. “We thrive on defense. We came out and pressured them and that was something that we’re proud to do, something that we’re capable of especially when we play like we need to play.”

As a result, the Lady Warriors converted some easy baskets and Walker gave her team the lead for good (26-25) with a 3-pointer during a 9-1 run.

Daniels, who had to sit the entire second quarter due to foul trouble, scored a team-high six points in the third period for SACA, which led 34-28 to start the final quarter.

"Forest Park was very athletic and matched up well with us which is something we are not always used to seeing," Cowan said.

In the boys’ contest there would be no need to rally since the Warriors took the lead early and would play with the advantage the rest of the way.

Thanks to 14 fourth-quarter points by Dozier, SACA would register its largest lead (20 points) in the frame.

"He did exactly what we expected him to do," Cage said. "That is something that we can expect from him because he is that type of player."
