Scott Speed, whose racing experience includes all three NASCAR national series and Formula One, visited Roswell last week to promote the Sylvania Silverstar zXe Global Rallycross Atlanta, which will be Aug. 10 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton.

Speed raced against local media members at Andretti Indoor Karting & Games in addition to previewing the event with local news outlets.

The race format consists of heat racers, a last chance qualifier race and a final race with the top finishers from each preliminary event.

The inaugural event at the speedway will combine action sports, short track racing and motocross with racing taking place on a course made up of dirt, asphalt, gravel, water and ramp jumps.

“For the cars to be able to do what they do, jump and accelerate, it’s pretty impressive to see on just on its own right,” Speed said in a statement. “Then, if you add in the type of racers we have in the series and the format with it being a sprint race and such a shootout, it breeds a lot of unknown. It is extremely exciting.”

Speed, who also currently competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, won the first rallycross race of the season at the X-Games in Brazil.

The race was Speed’s first in a rallycross car.

“You don’t ever expect to be able to jump into something and win on your first try, especially when you have never driven the car before or anything like it,” Speed said. “As soon as I sat in the car, it fit my driving style. [With] the way I see corners, it was a good fit. I still have lots to learn about the series and those cars, but it is certainly something that was a natural fit.”

Speed currently sits sixth in the overall championship standings.

Rallycross tickets are on sale now. Adult general admission tickets are $20. Ages 6 to 12 gain admission for $10, with ages five and under entering free.

Fans can upgrade their ticket and add paddock access for an additional $5.

Race entry is $5 per vehicle.
