Penny Scheetz, owner of Boogaloos boutique in Town Brookhaven agreed with that sentiment.
“You get something more special and you get better customer service,” Scheetz said of shopping local. “And you get that small town feeling.”
Scheetz added places like Town Brookhaven, which is mostly made up of local boutiques and businesses, make the plaza unique with its offerings.
Scheetz is no stranger to local businesses, as her first Boogaloos location is located in Decatur. She has been in Brookhaven for almost two years and what attracted her to the area was small town community feel.
On the importance of shopping local, Scheetz said shoppers most like to purchase unique items for themselves and others at relatively the same price as large retailers.
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be more expensive and then we have the same brands that Nordstrom’s carries but our prices are better,” she said. “And the biggest thing is you’re supporting your local community — you’re giving back to your community and you get something a lot more unique.”
Leonardo McClarty, president of the DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce, said it is important for DeKalb County residents to shop local if they can as a way to benefit the overall community.
“If there are goods and services they can acquire here during the holiday period, and even outside of the holiday period, then it can only help the county in terms of contributing to the county tax base,” he said.
At stores like Boogaloos, shoppers can not only get a variety of clothing, but also picture frames, accessories such as belts, scarves and gloves and handmade jewelry from local designers.
Scheetz is hoping for business during her second holiday season at the Brookhaven location to be even more successful than last year.
“Just shop locally, support your local businesses — its what drives America, it’s what made America what it was,” she said.
Even as a small business owner, Scheetz added when she goes out of town she makes sure to shop at the local stores to support them.
