Sodexo’s Feeding Our Future has a summer meal program where Sodexo employees and their business partners provide nutritious meals to children in need who are out of school for the summer.
“During the school year more than 21 million children receive free meals at school and during the summer less than 2.3 million receive that same free nutritious meal,” said Shondra Jenkins, Sodexo director of community relations. “So, there is a huge gap there, which is why Sodexo created Feeding Our Future to do our part and provide nutrition to children.”
Sodexo, a provider of quality of life services, has a collaborative volunteer effort with local Atlanta businesses and nonprofit partners such as CIBA Vision, The Coca-Cola Company and Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA.
“The summer barbecue is a special event we are hosting and will be a great opportunity for members of the press to be able to see this feed program first hand,” Jenkins said. “It will be a fun setting for the children and we will be feeding about 500 of them at the YMCA.”
The summer program is 12 weeks long and began in early June and will run through early August, feeding children in the greater Atlanta area five days a week, Monday through Friday. To date the program has provided more than 13,500 meals in the area.
One of the company’s many locations is in Johns Creek and it wants to raise awareness in the community and connect families with resources so that residents know about the feeding programs in their community.
“A huge factor in not reaching more children is the lack of awareness,” Jenkins said.
July 31 will be a great time to speak with volunteers, participants and organizers.
