The Georgia Department of Education rolled out the results this week of its new performance index, which measures schools and school districts on a 100-point scale.

Georgia’s College and Career Ready Performance Index replaces the No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress system. The U.S. Department of Education granted the state’s waiver from the No Child Left Behind accountability system last year. Georgia Deparment of Education officials claim the new system will help parents and the public better understand the quality of school performance.

The new index gives points in three areas: achievement, progress and achievement gap. Some schools also receive extra points — up to 10 — if they have a significant number of economically disadvantaged students, English learner students and students with disabilities meeting expectations. Additional points can also earned for challenging students to exceed expectations and participate in college and career readiness programs.
