The museum’s 97 Days of Play events — which began Memorial Day and will run until Labor Day, Sept. 1 — have featured a variety of fun and educational activities to keep kids entertained and learning during summer break.
“The 97 days represents the time between two summer holidays when the museum tries to provide more activities for kids while they are out of school,” said museum spokeswoman Brittany Loggins. “During this time we have science explorations, games, movies and other fun things to do that are also educational, so it keeps parents and kids busy and provides a fun place for families to go.”
Loggins said the additional summer activities are included for free with daily admission or an annual membership.
Many of the events this summer involve oceanic themes to go along with the museum’s ongoing, special exhibit, “Whales: Giants of the Deep,” which will continue through Aug. 24.
The exhibit allows families to explore the history and different species of whales through interactive games, short films, scale models and giant whale skeletons.
Ocean labs — where children get the chance to create marine-themed crafts and explore aquatic biofacts — and Fins and Flippers days, featuring puppet shows, giant bubble fun and a variety of ocean-themed, hands-on activities have been particularly popular this summer.
“A lot of the staff who have worked at the museum for years say the whale exhibit is one of the best exhibits we’ve ever had here and the response and interest has been really great so far,” Loggins said.
The museum will celebrate its well-known, prehistoric dinosaur exhibit towards the end of summer with a dinosaur birthday bash Aug. 23, from 10 am to 2 pm.
“This will be the 13th anniversary of our Giants of the Mesozoic exhibit so our guests will get to enjoy a day filled with dinosaur- and birthday-themed activities, games, crafts, hands-on fun and more,” Loggins said. “We also invite children to wear costumes for the event.”
