In a blog on the Atlanta Public Schools website, the Atlanta Board of Education announced Tuesday it has approved Superintendent Erroll Davis Jr.’s recommendation to appoint Howard E. Taylor as the new principal of North Atlanta High School in Buckhead.
The board voted unanimously in favor of the recommendation during Monday’s meeting.
Taylor is a veteran administrator who comes to the Atlanta district after serving as principal of Lilburn Middle School in Gwinnett County since 2008. Under his leadership, the school achieved Title I distinguished school status in 2009 and 2010. Taylor also has worked on the high school and college levels as an assistant principal and assistant professor, respectively.
“I’m elated to have been given the opportunity to join this phenomenal team,” he said. “I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learned from working as a college professor, principal and teacher to my work with the students and parents of North Atlanta.”
Taylor was one of the candidates who completed level four interviews, which are candidate interviews with the deputy superintendent of instruction, district spokesman Stephen Alford said.
Mark MyGrant, who retired in June as North Atlanta’s principal after five years at the school and 33 years in education, returned as interim principal the following month because a new principal could not be hired before the school year started in August. Taylor is expected to begin at North Atlanta Oct. 29, Alford said.
Angela Church, who along with Amy Shea serves as co-president of the North Atlanta Parent Teacher Student Association, said she is pleased with the choice of Taylor. Church, who has two children at the school, was on the panel that last month interviewed the eight candidates for the job.
“He is extremely passionate about education,” she said. “I reviewed the books he’s written, the articles he’s written and the presentations he’s given on global education. I think he’ll be an excellent fit for North Atlanta.”
