(UPDATED AT 2:25 P.M. SATURDAY WITH THE ACCIDENT VICTIM'S IDENTITY AND INFO ON THE CHARGES ASSOCIATED WITH IT)
in an email to the media Saturday at 2:16 p.m., Capt. Steve Rose, spokesman for the Sandy Springs Police Department, announced the identity of the victim of Saturday morning’s fatality accident on Interstate 285 between Glenridge Drive and Roswell Road.
The victim is 36-year-old Gerald D. Wallace of Norcross, Rose said. Wallace was killed when his car struck a tractor trailer that had slowed due to a car bumper obstructing the roadway.
The bumper apparently dislodged from another vehicle, driven by 45-year-old Ruben Vega, who struck the retaining wall just prior to this accident, Rose said. The driver of the tractor trailer slowed to a near stop, at which time he was hit by the car driven by Wallace. Witnesses said Wallace’s vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of impact.
Vega has been charged with a lane violation and second-degree vehicular homicide, Rose said. The driver of the tractor trailer was not charged.
The accident caused four westbound lanes to be closed.
