Paulding County’s unemployment rate rose in May after three months of decreases, and is the highest it has been since February, said state labor analyst Corey Smith.

The unemployment rate increased to 7.8 percent in May from 7.2 in April, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

“For the last several years the unemployment rate in the county has grown in May and June as schools let out for the summer,” Smith said.

The number of unemployed residents grew from 5,267 in April to 5,725 in May, an increase of 458.

Even with an increase in unemployment there was also a jump in labor force from 73,129 in April to 73,750 in May. This allowed for an increase in employment as well. Employed residents went from 678,862 in April to 679,025 in May, an increase of 163.

“Industries including health care and social assistance, wholesale trade, and retail trade saw initial filings for jobless benefits increase over the month,” Smith said.

The unemployment rate in May 2012 was 8.4 percent.

Surrounding counties all saw increases in unemployment, employment and labor force as well. Unemployment rates included Polk County at 8.2 percent; Haralson at 9.3; Douglas at 8.5; Cobb at 7.5; Carroll at 9.8 and Bartow at 8.6 percent.

Metro Atlanta had an increase in unemployment from 7.6 percent in April to 8.2 in May.

Georgia also had a spike to 8.3 percent in May from 8.2 in April. The state unemployment rate was 9.1 in May 2012.
