The Union Grove Wolverines aim to take sole possession of first place in sub-region 4A-AAAAA this Friday when they meet Mundy’s Mill at Twelve Oaks Stadium.

After three sub-region games, Union Grove and Mundy’s Mill are tied atop the standings with 3-0 records but that will change this week since one team will gain the edge on the other.

The Wolverines could have a slight edge in momentum due to their 35-13 win last year over the Tigers.

However as far as current winning streaks, Mundy’s Mill has the edge in that category with three consecutive victories, following a 26-6 triumph over Forest Park a week ago.

Rodney Smith rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Rodricous Gates had a rushing TD and a passing score, and Tahir Prophet ran for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines won their second straight contest, a 45-7 rout of winless Mount Zion last Friday at Tara Stadium.

Chad Reaves ran for 127 yards and two TDs on 13 carries. Luke Parker also rushed for two scores and Jonathan Slade threw a touchdown pass to Caleb Ham.

This Friday’s game will also wrap up a five-game road trip for Union Grove.

At the other end of the sub-region standing, the Ola Mustangs attempt to improve to 2-2 in league play when they host Forest Park on Friday.

Both teams are hoping to bounce back from double-digit losses last week. The Mustangs appear to have the better chance to do so since they played Union Grove (5-2) and Locust Grove (5-2) earlier this season and defeated Forest Park 35-0 last year.

In Region 2-AAAAAA, Luella has a good chance to bounce back as well today against Morrow at Tara Stadium. Last week, the Lions fell to Lovejoy 51-7 and the Mustangs lost 29-0 to Alcovy.

Last year, Luella topped Morrow 21-6.
