It was no surprise when the senior defender proved to be the difference for Westminster in the title contest, scoring the deciding goal that gave the Wildcats a 2-1 victory over Wesleyan.
With his major contribution to Westminster’s AA state championship, Butker is the 2013 Northside Neighbor boys’ soccer player of the year.
Butker is primarily known for his accomplishments on the football field, where he was ranked the top kicker and punter in the state and is headed to Georgia Tech on a football scholarship.
He certainly made his presence felt on the soccer field as well with 14 goals and one assists, earning him Area 6AA player of the year honors as well as team most valuable player for the Wildcats.
“He was an outstanding leader and came through with big plays when we needed him to,” Westminster coach Scott Snyder said.
St. Pius X junior forward Tyler Alexander also made a big impact on the soccer field this season, scoring 23 goals to lead the Golden Lions to the AAA state title.
“Tyler is our team captain and he’s a strong vocal leader who led our team to the state championship,” St. Pius coach David O’Shea said.
Riverwood senior midfielder Emile Buchheister was another high-impact player, tallying nine goals and 12 assists. He was an All-Area 7AAAAA first-team selection and was a finalist for the area’s player of the year.
“There was never a match where Emile wasn’t the best player on the field,” Riverwood community coach Adam Beckman said. “He was a great leader for us and his ability to control the midfield made him a catalyst for our attack.”
Butker was joined on the boys’ All-Area first team by Westminster teammates Trey Blasingame, a midfielder, and Johnny Ostrowski, a defender.
Also on the first team from St. Pius, along with Alexander, is forward J.D. Manzo and goalkeeper Ryan Beck.
Marist is represented on the first team by forward Patrick Jackson, midfielder Felipe Gastaldi and defender Micah Akin.
Riverwood also features midfielder William Fox and defender Juan Chirinos, along with Buchheister.
Representing Lovett on the first team are midfielders Alan Floyd and Harrison Leeson.
Pace midfielders Sajat Rabbani and Josh Blank are the other first team players.
