According to head coach Corey Gochee, the team made four errors which led to three unearned runs.
“We had a great approach at the plate but we didn’t play so well defensively,” said Gochee.
Poor defensive play seems to be a pattern for the Wildcats. Gochee noted the defense could have been better despite victories in the three previous games against Paulding County, Hiram and Villa Rica.
“We played very well. We had good pitching and batting. Offensively we’re clicking, but if we don’t play defense we’re really going to put ourselves behind,” Gochee said.
Playing three games over their spring break, Gochee said it helps the team as they are able to focus only on baseball during that time.
At this point in the season, the Wildcats have four players Gochee named as his team’s top hitters – junior outfielder Nathan Robinson and senior infielders Chris Cuzzort, Camden McGill and Tyler Stringer.
Cuzzort is hitting .316, has 12 RBIs and seven stolen bases. McGill is hitting .415, has one home run, one triple and 11 stolen bases. Robinson is hitting .406, two triples and six stolen bases. Stringer is hitting .339 with 21 RBIs and four second base hits.
Following the game against Rome, Woodland played East Paulding on April 12. With East Paulding being at the top of the region with a 10-1 region record, Gochee said this matchup would be tough, but he knows every one from here on out is equally as important as the next.
“They’re in first place and have separated themselves from the rest of the region, but they’re only most important because it’s the next game,” said Gochee.
With five games left in the season and five teams ahead of them in the region, Gochee does not feel like his team is out of the running for a playoff spot at all — in fact he likes his team’s chances.
“I think we’ve really started to click on offense and I like how we match up with everyone. I really like our chances moving into the last part of the season,” said Gochee.
On April 22 Woodland will host New Manchester for senior night at their last home game.
