Gov. Nathan Deal has expanded the state of emergency today to include 43 additional counties, bringing the total to 88.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City said this morning its winter storm warning for the metro Atlanta area remains in effect until Thursday at 1 p.m. It predicts a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Accumulations will range today from little to none across most of the metro area due to above-freezing surface temperatures.

The outlook as temperatures cool tonight is accumulating snow and ice as the wintry mix, presently in north Georgia, commences in metro Atlanta. By Wednesday morning this will transition to freezing rain and then snow on Wednesday night.

Snow will accumulate on roads, making for hazardous driving conditions tonight. Travel will be dangerous Wednesday due to snow and ice. Widespread power outages are possible from the effects of ice.

Winds, normally below 10 MPH, will gust up to 30 MPH.

Temperatures will be in the mid-30s today, lower 30s tonight and Wednesday, and below freezing Wednesday night.

Drivers are advised to stay off the roads. If travel is necessary, drivers should keep a flashlight, food, water and other emergency supplies in their vehicles in the event of a breakdown or impassable roads.

National Weather Service terms:

Winter Storm Watch – 50 percent or higher chance of significant winter storm

Winter Weather Advisory – 80 percent or higher chance of a winter precipitation event, causing inconveniences but does not meet warning criteria

Winter Storm Warning – 80 percent or higher chance of a winter event having a least one predominant hazard expected to cause a significant impact

Ice Storm Warning - 80 percent or higher chance of freezing rain
