Today, of the 260 members of Roswell Rotary, 21 percent are women. And this year the club has more gender-related milestones.
On Sept. 9, the Roswell Rotary golf tournament is being combined with the first tennis tournament sponsored by the civic club.
Chairperson for the day’s events is Theodora Keyserling, assisted by golf co-chairperson Adele Hamilton and tennis chairperson Mindy Jones.
In its 35-year history, the golf tournament has heretofore been headed up by a male Rotarian. And, as Keyserling noted, it traditionally has drawn mostly male entrants.
“We wanted to broaden our fundraising base. A lot of women-owned businesses in Roswell wanted to sponsor things that are not golf-related,” she said.
“And we noticed that at the casino-themed after party last year, more women than men played the games and bids on silent auction items were either from females or female-influenced.”
The tennis tournament is dubbed the Hagan Cup Classic after club member, Roswell resident and future Rotary district governor Bob Hagan.
“He’s a major donor to Rotary and one of the top philanthropists in Roswell,” Keyserling said.
The winner receives the Hagan Cup, a 2.5-foot tournament cup which the winner is expected to defend in the 2014 event.
The golf tourney, which draws more than 500 players, volunteers and businesses professionals in north Fulton, always fills up fast. Hosted at the Country Club of Roswell, it is a double shotgun with morning and afternoon flights.
The Hagan Cup Classic will begin in the afternoon at 3 p.m. “So far, we’ve had more females than males sign up,” Keyserling said.
The golf event annually raises more than $170,000 for more than 20 charities in north Fulton, making it one of the largest volunteer efforts in the state.
Similar to last year, the 2013 after party and awards reception features a Vegas-style gambling casino, dinner, drinks by Roswell-based and female-owned Vixen Vodka, dancing and a live and silent auction. The after party starts at 5:30 p.m. and tickets for the event can be found on the tournament website.
