North Fulton students are looking toward summer vacation, and for Milton High School seniors Vaughn Nickerson and Grace Jamieson, hard work over the past few years has earned them the titles of valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

During her high school career, Nickerson has served as president of the National French Honor Society and founder of the National English Honor Society at Milton, and in the fall she will be attending University of Georgia to study linguistics.

“They have a huge program,” she said. “It’ll be a lot of fun.”

Aside from her linguistic pursuits, Nickerson has been involved in many other activities, including the marching band where she has taken on leadership roles such as section leader and manager of the band equipment.

“I’ve made so many great friends here, especially in band because I’ve been in that for four years,” she said.

“She is known as creative, a scholar, mature and resourceful,” said school counselor Normandee Kinard. “She also is very modest and dedicated to excellence in everything she does. Her goal is to increase the world pool of knowledge through her research and work.”

Nickerson will graduate with a 101.48 average and will have completed 10 advanced placement courses and college English.

Jamieson said she is involved in several activities at Milton, but she has spent a lot of her time in honors societies and literary pursuits.

“What I’ve really gotten involved in is the literary magazine,” she said. “I’m an editor right now.”

The soon-to-be graduate will be pursuing her love of writing as she attends Columbia University in New York to study English and education.

School counselor Curtisa Johnson said Jamieson is a hard worker yet maintains modesty about her accomplishments.

“Nevertheless, even with such an extraordinary intelligence, Grace is very patient, giving and honoring to all of her peers,” she said. “This makes Grace everything that our teachers hope for in a student and a model of excellence for her fellow classmates.”
