Decatur firm selected as finalist for national award

Local public relations maven Karin Koser is on the cusp of getting her fair share of the national spotlight.

Koser’s Decatur-based firm, KPKinteractive, has been selected as a finalist in the 2012 Silver Anvil Awards, a major coup in the public relations realm.

The DeKalb County native’s boutique marketing communications company received the honor for a campaign — anchored by a widely distributed educational video series — it crafted about brain and spinal cord injuries.

“We are looking at it as a launching pad to other significant work,” Koser said. “We’ve really been strategic in the kind of work we accept … targeting work that makes a difference in people’s lives.”

KPKinteractive acts as the video/interactive communications agency for Shepherd Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit hospital specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for spinal cord and brain injury patients.

The video series “What you need to know about brain and spinal cord injury,” is being distributed across the country. That project is part of an integrated awareness campaign to educate families and loved ones of people affected by a recent spinal cord or brain injury.

Koser, a University of Georgia alumni, and her creative team spent more than a year crafting the campaign. It involved input from physicians and medical experts, neuroscientists and advocates as well as an appearance by Lee Woodruff, the CBS Morning News contributor whose ABC News journalist husband, Bob, suffered a severe brain injury while imbedded with troops in Iraq.

“In terms of our approach, we wanted to make sure that when they come to trauma centers [loved ones] will be able to help patients prepare for what’s next,” Koser said. “Most people, relatives, are in total shock … they have no idea where to go from there. We did a lot of research trying to find out what people want to know … I put myself in their position and figured out what I’d want to know.”

Being nominated for a Silver Anvil, presented by the Public Relations Society of America, is akin to an Academy Award nod for someone in the movie business, insiders said.

Larry Bowie, Shepherd Center marketing and project director, commended Koser and company and the powers that be for “recognizing the importance” of educating relatives and other loved ones of newly injured patients via a comprehensive resource.

Koser’s firm, comprised of a staff of four, is also up for a Bronze Anvil — for the “What you need to know …” video series itself.

The Silver Anvil Awards ceremony will be held in New York City June 7.
