Sophomore Blaine Boaz took over the No. 1 singles spot last season as a freshman. Pius coach Lianna Jones said Boaz keeps the atmosphere loose when she is not dominating on the court.
“She has probably the most team spirit of any of the girls,” Jones said. “She is rooting for her teammates constantly.”
Jones said the No. 1 singles match is usually a tough matchup, but Boaz has handled the pressure well. Jones said Boaz stepped up when her team needed her the most in the state tournament.
“She had never beaten the girl she played in the finals,” Jones said. “But she won and that really pumped the rest of the team up. She has not been able to beat that girl in the individual tournament environment, but she did it in the team environment. She put the team before herself. That win was crucial to us winning.”
Boaz battled in the finals to split the first two games, but won 6-1 in the third set for the win.
“To go out there and take it to someone you have never beaten like that was amazing,” Jones said.
Jones said Boaz takes pride in playing for her teammates.
