Buckhead, Vinings and Sandy Springs voters in the primary election July 31 will elect county, state and Congressional candidates who completed their qualifying procedures May 23 through 25.

In Congress, District 5 incumbent John Lewis, D-Atlanta, will face Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson while retired attorney Howard Stopeck is the only Republican in the running.

District 6 incumbent Tom Price, R-Roswell, has no Republican opposition but will face off against Democrat Jeff Kazanow of Roswell or Robert Montigel of Alpharetta in November.

The state Senate faces churn with three District 6 G.O.P. — candidates Josh Belinfante, Drew Ellenburg and Hunter Hill — vying for the chance to unseat Democrat incumbent Doug Stoner, D-Smyrna.

District 38 State Sen. Horacena Tate, D-Atlanta, battles Democratic Party contender Reginald Crossley of Atlanta.

District 56 incumbent John Albers, R-Roswell, is unopposed in his party but will be challenged in November by Akhtar Sadiq of Roswell.

Running unopposed are District 32 State Sen. Judson Hill, R-Marietta, District 36 State Sen. Nan Orrock, D-Atlanta; District 39 State Sen. Vincent Fort, D-Atlanta; District 51 (formerly 49) State Rep. Wendell Willard, R-Sandy Springs; and District 52 State Rep. Joe Wilkinson, R-Sandy Springs.

In the state House of Representatives, District 53 (formerly 44) incumbent Sheila Jones, D-Atlanta, will square off against attorneys Jason Esteves and Robert Patillo, both of Atlanta.

District 54 State Rep. Edward Lindsey, R-Atlanta, has no G.O.P. rivals but will face Democrat Lynn Brown McKinney of Atlanta in the general election.

District 55 incumbent Rashad Taylor, D-Atlanta, will fight over a newly drawn District 57 with its incumbent, Pat Gardner, D-Atlanta.

In District 56, retiring incumbent Kathy Ashe, D-Atlanta, has endorsed Kenneth Britt, who challenges fellow Democrat and fellow Atlanta resident “Able” Mable Thomas in July.

In the nonpartisan Fulton County school board race, District 1 incumbent Linda Shultz will meet challenger Robert Goodman of Roswell.

District 3 incumbent Gail Dean is unopposed.

District 4 incumbent Linda Bryant is in a four-way battle with Retina Burton of Atlanta, Anna Croley of Fairburn and Paula J. Ward of Atlanta.

Likewise, the partisan job of county sheriff is a shootout between incumbent Theodore “Ted” Jackson and fellow Democrats Frank L. Brown of Red Oak, Curtis S. Farmer of East Point and Richard Lankford of College Park.

Tax Commissioner Arthur E. Ferdinand, a Democrat, will take on Royce John Morris of Atlanta. The winner will run unopposed in November.

Solicitor General Carmen Smith has been challenged by Teri Walker, a Democrat from Fairburn.

All probate, state court and superior court of Atlanta judges in the race are unopposed, with the exception of Superior Court Judge Todd Markle, who picked up opposition from Clarence R. Johnson Jr. of Atlanta.

Clerk of Superior Court Cathelene “Tina” Robinson of Atlanta has been challenged by Boyd C. Chisholm of East Point.

Surveyor Bill Daniel faces no Republican challenger and will run unopposed in November.
