Whitaker was a police officer in Johns Creek since the beginning of the department, said Officer Jimmy Marshall, and served in other communities before that.
“We started [the tournament] because Greg passed away unexpectedly,” Marshall said. “Last year we gave all the money to his family.”
This year, the tournament will benefit the Johns Creek Public Safety foundation, a nonprofit that provides funding and resources to offices and firefighters in times of crisis.
“We want to build it up in case someday one of our own needs it,” Marshall said.
The tournament will be held June 18 at St. Ives Country Club. Registration and breakfast will be at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and a silent auction, raffle and dinner from 3 to 7 p.m.
Registration for the event is open until June 14, and Marshall said it has filled up in the past. Police and fire personnel have an entry fee of $100 and $125 for all other guests.
A registration form can be found on the city’s website and should be emailed to james.marshall@johnscreekga.gov or shanna@stives country.club.org.
