Monday through June 28, France AllPro Athlete Management Inc. will hold its ninth All Star Football Camp, free for youths ages 8 to 18, on Mount Vernon Presbyterian’s Glenn Campus in Sandy Springs.
France, a Buckhead resident who represents more than 60 players, started the event in 2003 and helps in its day-to-day operation, along with the capable hands of some of the NFL’s biggest stars.
“I think it’s important to never forget where you came from,” France said. “If people are in a position to give back and provide a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience to somebody else, why not do it?”
The non-contact camp concentrates on fundamentals and skills of the game, promotes sportsmanship and is a chance to play football and interact with the players they’d only seen before on television.
France, a resident of Buckhead since 1995, has established himself as one of the premier agents in the NFL, recently signing former Alabama star Marcell Dareus, the Buffalo Bills defensive tackle who was the third overall selection in the 2011 Draft.
He’s one of several of France’s highly touted clients who will assist at the camp, along with Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, New Orleans Saints (and former Atlanta Falcons) linebacker Curtis Lofton, San Diego Chargers running back Ronnie Brown and Chargers linebacker Takeo Spikes.
“I always preach to my players how important it is to give back to the community, so I thought what better way to [show] them how important it is by doing it myself and creating this event,” France said.
The camp was held annually until last year, when it was cancelled due to the NFL lockout that threatened to delay the start of the season. France held it at Mount Vernon in 2010 and was impressed with the school and its facilities.
Registration is open through Friday on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Then again, it’s not like the Mustangs are strangers to the pros. Mount Vernon head football coach Reggie Burnette played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and led the team in special teams tackles in 1992.
