Thursday, Buckhead Christian Ministry competed in Twive and Receive (www.TwiveAndReceive.org), a one-day, Twitter-based fundraising contest to support nonprofits in different cities across the U.S. As the only charity represent-ing Atlanta, the ministry garnered citywide support and earned third place for Atlanta, giving the city the unofficial title of Third Most Generous City in America. Boston’s The Ellie Fund Breast Cancer Avengers (Amazing Kids Demonstrating Hope and Courage, won the contest with 100 unique donors and $53,089 raised. Minneapolis, Minn.’s Animal Humane Society finished second with 510 unique donors and $52,295.

The fundraising competition ran for 24 hours Thursday beginning at 3 a.m. The three charities that raised the most money received a share of the $30,000 prize money, in addition to the sum of all individual donations. With 82 unique donors, the ministry was able to raise more than $41,000 in the 24-hour competition.

It is a local nonprofit that helps families, primarily the working poor, to meet their basic needs — food, clothing and shelter — during times of crisis. The ministry also provides money management and life-skills education in order to prevent future financial problems for such families and help them achieve self-sufficiency.

It serves more than 8,500 people of all faiths annually. They are people one encounters on a daily basis — wait-resses, clerks, janitors, and health care assistants — and reside in 15 zip codes throughout metro Atlanta. The ministry receives the majority of its funding from individuals and private foundations.
